What is Card Grading?
Card grading is a professional evaluation process where the condition of a collectible card is assessed by experts and sealed in a protective case. A graded card has an officially certified condition, which can significantly increase its value.
The Major Grading Companies
PSA (Professional Sports Authenticator)
PSA is the most recognized grading company worldwide:
- Scale: 1-10 (10 = Gem Mint)
- Advantages: Highest market acceptance, best resale values
- Disadvantages: Often long wait times, higher prices
- Popular for: Pokemon, Yu-Gi-Oh!, Vintage Sports Cards
BGS (Beckett Grading Services)
BGS is known for detailed subgrades:
- Scale: 1-10 with Subgrades (Centering, Corners, Edges, Surface)
- Advantages: Detailed evaluation, Black Label for perfect 10s
- Disadvantages: Stricter grading, more complex system
- Popular for: Modern cards, Sports Cards
CGC (Certified Guaranty Company)
CGC is the newcomer in the trading card space:
- Scale: 1-10 with optional subgrades
- Advantages: Faster processing, lower prices
- Disadvantages: Lower market acceptance than PSA
- Popular for: Originally comics, growing in trading cards
When Should You Grade Cards?
Grading is especially worthwhile for:
- High-value cards in excellent condition
- Vintage cards (First Edition, Base Set, etc.)
- Cards with high market value (over 100 CHF)
- Cards for long-term investment
